Dear friends,
Happy Summer! We are flamin’ hot (written during the heat wave in a house with no air conditioning) on the path to empower ALL nonspeakers with autism with communication and education.
We had an eventful spring with conferences in Indiana and Mississippi and an advocacy tour in London and Ireland. Our tour included 7 events in 6 days with local organizations such as Get Autism Active and Unlocking Voices. It was a pleasure to meet fluent typers and newcomers eager to use our stencil sets and C4A Academy videos. In London, we met with the Chair of London’s Education Board, who publicly supported teaching nonspeakers to type in schools.
We also co-hosted a screening of SPELLERS on Capitol Hill in April. We’re thankful to Congressman Darrell Issa who sponsored our event and the other members of Congress who supported it, including Senator Bob Casey, Senator Rand Paul, Congressman Wiley Nickel, and Congressman Bill Posey. Author of Happiness Falls Angie Kim moderated our panel, and we appreciate the many typers who joined us for a lively discussion.
We’re excited by the growth of C4A Academy. Our Facebook community exceeds 500 members and we are working to add resources, including more instructional videos, cardboard stencil sets, student case study videos, and additional written materials to help families on their journey. Looking ahead, our board member Grace Moskola has organized a panel discussion at the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) Conference in Maryland in July. I am also honored to be the special guest presenter with Temple Grandin at the Autism Parenting Summit in October. Their spring conference had 46,000 attendees from around the world.
